Maenads mosaic These are fragments from the 2nd-3rd century AD of the triclinium pavement to which the Gypsy Girl mosaic belonged. The house to which it belonged had been destroyed during the Sassanids invasion in 252/3. The mosaic was damaged by art smugglers in the 1960’s. When whole it would be the largest floor mosaic found in Zeugma, at 9,25 x 13,50 metres. 12 Pieces were found to be in the Bowling Green University in the US, but have been returned to Turkey and are now on display. The mosaic contained depictions, apart from the Gypsy Girl, of theatrical masks, heads of Pan and Silenus, various birds (amongst them an Indian peacock, associated with Dionysos) within geometric decorations, enriched with flower decorations.
