On my first visit I had not been able to climb to the castle. This time I decided I would. There is no road and for much of the climb you have to follow some goat trails or just trust your luck. The climb was well worth the trouble: the views from ever increasing heights on the old town were impressive, and at the top the sight of the coastline to the west was spectacular.

At the top, with some goats of a big flock, guarded by this dog. I had been warned by a shepherdess that I met on the way up there would be a dog somewhere. Turks seem to be afraid of dogs generally, kids will warn you if there is one ahead (and expect you to be much afraid), and a notice that there is a dog should stop you. I have long ago found that you can turn these hard working animals around by the simple expedient of carrying (and offering for consumption) some cakes. You can buy them wrapped in every store, you can eat them if you’re hungry, and they offer great protecting from even the fiercest dogs. One chocolate cake was enough for this fellow, though when I later met him coming down I shared another cake with him.
