Izmir 2007 3941.jpg

The Alsancak railroad station seemed to have lost its function. In 2007 I saw neither a train nor tickets being sold, just empty waiting rooms and platforms. When I visited in 2015 it was a functioning station again.

The Wikipedia mentions: "the second-oldest railway station in Turkey, after the Kemer Railway Station (also in İzmir), being completed in 1858. The station houses the headquarters of TCDD District 3 and is the largest station in Turkey by size. "

Yes it is right. The regular rail system lost it's function in Izmir, and i am not sure but i think all local train fairs has been stopped. Since five years Municipality of Izmir and TCDD ( Turkish Rail Roads Company) has been working together in order to improve city's local transportation system and these roads and stations will be used in new light rail project (combined regular rail roads and subways with fast trains) pretty soon, hopefully in couple years. This Rail Road project starts from southest point fo the city and ends northest point (from Menderes to Menemen) which will be approximately 100 km distance.
