The mosque was commissioned by Tekeli Lala Mehmet Paşa, who was ‘Lala’ (tutor) to the future Mehmed III before becoming Grand Vizier in 1595, ten months after his pupil ascended to the throne. Unfortunately, he died suddenly, only ten days after this appointment…
Unlike his nickname ‘Tekeli’ suggests, he was not from the Teke-region (Antalya), but was born in a Saruhanlı (Manisa) family of ‘Eyalet Askerleri’ (local militia).
The prayer hall measures 9,90 x 9,90 m; the porch is somewhat wider (about 13 m).
