Ankara 2006 09 0270.jpg

This ‘Güven Anıtı’ (= Monument of Confidence) was erected in 1935. Its designers were two Austrians: Anton Hanak (1875-1934) and Josef Thorak (1889-1952).

Hanak was professor of monumental sculpture, first at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna (1913-1932) and later on at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts (1932-1934).
Thorak became (in 1933) one of the two "official sculptors" of the Third Reich. Both artists were well known for their "grandiose monuments".

The monument seen here that sits in Guven Park (Thrust Park) depicts the heart of the Turkish Independence War. What makes Turkish Independence War different than other such wars in the history was that it was won by the people only (not the present state or rather empire) despite the fact that they were so poor, lack of organized army, and etc. The figures on this monument describe the men and women giving away their food, their shoes, clothes to the anatolians fighting for the independence.
