Ankara 2006 09 0255.jpg

Street furniture is improving a lot (there is a major overhaul in phone booths and I no longer hit my head that often). Even some "fun furniture" is being introduced.

Actually, I wish the street furniture was improving. I think you'd agree that the marble seats do not really fit in there. You'll notice that the facades of older buildings, as well as the statues and some park floors in Ankara are covered with a special stone, andesite (andezit). This was an ideal stone for Ankara because it is immune to freezing and temperature changes, it is decorative, does not lose its color, does not slip (ideal for pools in parks, etc.) and does not require much of a maintenance. In my childhood, the pedestrian pavements and border stones, decorative walls, steps, etc were all made of andezit. Unfotunately, like everything else that changed after 1980 too... The corruption overtook in the city's appearance as in everything else. The loss of taste became so apparent. Since then our pavements, our roads, our bus stops, telephone booths etc have all been renewed every 2-3 years, and never was the new ones better than the old ones. Today one longs to see something in Ankara that you can say -- this is so characteristic of Ankara.

this street furniture, seems to be designed anonymously, without engament , i think they are terrible. far from the feeiling of being citizen, standing in the city , in the mittle of the city they give you the feeiling , not to sit there. it is probably the uncivilised ideas of ihsan melih gokcek . the mayor of ankara
