Kars 3771.jpg

view map

Kars has many buildings in a style that to my eyes is different to the one I see elsewhere in the country. I have seen similar buildings in Edirne at the other side of the country. They are often painted in wonderful colours and I hope they will not perish in the "lets go modern" craze.

I have been informed this house is in the Greek style.

This building houses the province's archives

yes very Russian designs, like many buildings on the other side of the border in Armenia. Russia briefly took Kars in 1829, withdrew under pressure from France and Great britain, recaptured it during the Crimean war in 1854-1855 and finally in 1878 became part of the Russian empire. I think Armenians, Turks , Greeks, Kurds etc in the city saw some progressive features in Russian rule, especially in bringing European influences more directly to the region
