Some of the remains of the ancient city, see the first pictures of this series for a bit of history. This must be the ruins of a Doric Temple of Athena.
You might like Francis H Bacon's 1881-83 "The Assos Journal," edited by Lenore O. Congdon, Phd. It's available on the Internet under her name, a wonderful account of the original digs in Assos. She taught art history at the American girls' school in Izmir. The Keenes, Lenore Congdon's parents, who also taught in Turkey, knew one of the archeologists who was a disciple of Bacon and passed on Bacon's journals to them.

Yes, it is indeed the Athena Temple. It is a terribly important temple for many reasons. Architectually, it has a frieze and is not cannonically Doric and there are some other particular aspects. It is largely in Boston and Istanbul now, and as you can see, the Turks are now reconstructing it a bit. It really should be rebuilt since it is so important.
You have a great feel for Turkey. Its so wonderful seeing your pictures. Makes me want to go back and retire there--which I am considering. Regards, JHSibal@aol.com
