Kayseri Dec2005 058

The Atatürk monument with the Saat Kulesi or Clock Tower next to it. In the back looms the huge Hilton hotel.

The bronze equestrian statue of Atatürk was made in 1983/84 by the Turkish sculptor Haluk Tezonar (1942-1995), who was a many-sided youth who studied at Istanbul’s School of Music (contrabass) and Academy of Fine Arts (ceramics) before turning definitively to sculpting. He ended his career as headmaster of the sculpture department of the Fine Arts Faculty of the Marmara University (Istanbul).

The clock tower dates from 1906, following the decree which was sent to the provincial governors to commemorate the 25th anniversary (in 1901) of Sultan Abdülhamid II's ascension to the Ottoman throne by building these demonstrations of the Empire’s modernity.
