This is the Armenian Catholic Church of Mush, now used as garbage dumb. The "best" preserved Armenian church in Mush.

Mush was one of Armenia's most important places.

The name Mush dates back to Armenian Pagan times, and comes from the following legend. Astghik, an Armenian Goddess, was taking a bath in the river of Mush every morning. The local youth found out about this, so they went to gaze at the beauty. When Astghik saw the men, she covered the area in fog, which in Armenian sounds Mshush (hence, the name Mush). When the river was covered by Mshush, Astghik's nudity could not been admired at.

Mush was the largest center of massacres during the Armenian genocide. About 100,000 Armenians were slaughtered in Mush in 1915.

Mush had Armenia's second most important cathedral, St. Karapet, which was bombed by the Turkish troops in the 1960s. The photos of St. Karapet taken before the 1920s can be seen athttp://www.loc.gov/rr/amed/guide/nes-armeniageorgia.html (in the U.S. cultural collections). The church is totally ruined today, and its stones have been used by locals to build secular buildings.

Another famous church of Armenia was St. Apostles (Sourp Arakelots) that was also in Mush. It is ruined today. The Armenian epic poem, David of Sassoun, was born in this church....
