This is part of the mosaic of the Marriage of Dionysos and Ariadne. It is situated in such a place that I could not take a decent picture (lots of shadow, glare on some spots).
The notice at the mosaic proves a point I have before: notices in museums should not be written by museum staff who think they can write a fair English text. They often cannot:
"This mosaic was found during the rescue excavations directed by Gaziantep Museum in 1992 after Zeugma guard informed that smugglers had been trying to steal a mozaic with figure. The 2/3 of the mozaic performed where it was found was stolen feloniously and mercilessly by smugglers in June. 1998, wanted."
The picture that shows the mosaic as it was proves a great work of art was lost because of these "smugglers". Somewhere someone is enjoying what should be visible to the world. The bastard.
