Surp Kirkor Lusavoriç

view map

I used to think this was Panaghia (a Turkish orthodox church), but have been informed this is a nearby Armenian church, the one of St. Gregory the Illuminator. It was reconstructed after the street was widened. An earlier construction of no great value was torn down, the present church is a replica of a masterpiece of Armenian architecture, the Echmiadzin.

From the Wikipedia: "Saint Gregory the Illuminator or Saint Gregory the Enlightener (Armenian: Գրիգոր Լուսաւորիչ translit. Grigor Lusavorich, Greek: Γρηγόριος Φωστήρ or Φωτιστής, Gregorios Phoster or Photistes), the founder and patron saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church (born c. 257 AD - died c. 331 AD) was a religious leader credited with forging the Christian identity of Armenia via conversion. Armenia was the first country to establish itself as a Christian nation in the year 301 A.D."
