Afrodisias theatre

view map

One of a series of pictures of the theatre. It dates from the second half of the first century and was rebuilt near the end of the second. On a wall near the north parados (entrance) a set of inscriptions was found from the first half of the third century, with letters and historical annotations, going back to the first century BC.

Constructed before 27 BC - gift from a local celebrity, Zoilos, who had been a war prisoner and slave of the first emperor Augustus. As a freedman and friend of Augustus he got easily favors for his home town !
