Afrodisias stadion

The stadium is the largest and best preserved construction of this type to survive till today. It measured 262 by 59 and on about 30 rows of seats could hold 30.000 spectators. It was built in the 1st-2nd century AD and was used mainly for athletic events and games, although it was also used for periodical sculpture matches!

The best preserved stadion of Anatolia, maybe even of the Ancient World. 30.000 spectators. After the earthquake of the VIIth cent. the eastern part (foreground) was arranged for gladiator games and the like.

Dear Osseman, the story of 318 monks originates from this stadion-amphitheatre :) Walls seen behind are city ramparts
