Izmir street scene

Opposite the main entrance to the Konak Pier is this elegant bridge, that curves back to the city.

On it two children sold paper handkerchiefs (like inviting you to weigh yourself on scales this is a form of begging). However, they brought their homework along, and were too concentrated on their work to notice customers.

still same boy for years..:( he must be enforced to do this job.But there isn't any changes between 2004 and 2008. Same boy... Same jacket (but it's a little bit shrunken)...same obligations...

I've also seen the same tactic used in Ankara. Unless it was the same child or just plain coincidence, I will have to agree with Kara Murat. Also logic holds that a kid who is forced to beg (probably by his parents) wouldn't be brave (or foolish?) enough to turn his back to his "job" and choose to do his homework. Unless specifically instructed by his parents to do so, this seems unlikely to me.

i beg to differ. i have seen an awful lot of begging and think i know some tricks. Unless this is a typical izmirli trick that i never saw thisa employed elsewhere.
Kara Murat 21-Dec-2006 13:12
Sorry to burst your bubble but this is a common trick for sympathy employed by this child-beggars.
