Konak Pier once functioned as a landing site for ships, it has been stripped of much, but luckily not all, of its interior, and now houses lots of up-market shops. You can find a good (English too) book-shop here, and refined clothes, shoes, restaurants, a cinema and coffee shops. Security checks at the entrances add to a sense of being among the happy few. Which is not always a pleasure to me.
