Istanbul Aya Sofya in exonarthex

view map

We now enter the church once again, through the West entrance, so the old main entrance. We come in the exonarthex first, that’s this. Note how all the floors and walls are covered with marble. In the exonarthex is a small exhubition of some reconstruction drawing and the like, I will show two because I like them. Also you will find the sarcophagus of some empress. Not quite the quality you may find in the Vatican museum in Rome. There they used porphyry, this is rather ordinary stone.

This is what the church looked like when Mehmet the Conqueror first saw it, in 1453. By the way, he showed great respect for the building.

Be thankful at least she wasn't torn down... as some churches & grand cathedrals even in the cradle of the west have experienced - This is a historic treasure (architectural, artistic, etc) for all humanity regardless of your faith/denomination and lets hope it will be respectfully maintained for future generations of all peoples everywhere to appreciate it for what it is... in all its graceful, serene beauty, not what it may have once represented in another sense (political/imperial or otherwise)

this photo is from a 3 volume book written by Konstantinidis in the begining of the 20th century dedicated to Agia Sophia. It is one of the most comprehensive books about the monument (arhitectural plans, measuremnt, decoration etc). This picture is an idealized form of what the building would have been like in the span of almost 1000 years so I dont think it can represent Ag. Sofia in a specific period

So much respect, that it was turned into a Mosque, with most of the religious images, iconography, and other Christian references defaced...
