King and Queen offering to Museum Alacahöyük weather god

view map

This is a detail of a scene. To see the whole, go to the replica in place at Alacahöyük at http://www.pbase.com/image/36007081 . You can return from there.

A king, followed by a queen, approaches an altar, and (not on the picture) a bull on a pedestal, which is a representation of a weather-god. Hittite, 14th century BC.

A study in the mid 1990s, supervised by Dr. Hatçe Baltacıoğlu of the Ankara Archaeological Museum, employing stratigraphic data as well as style critique, dates the sculptures of the Sphynxes Gate to the reign of Muwatalli (1306-1282 BC).
