Zile kids

view map

As always I was quickly surrounded and escorted by a group of kids. As usual "What's your name" was about all the English spoken by most of them, with the occasional exception. Shortly before I had had the curious experience of speaking about current Dutch affairs (and the approaching school year) in my own language, Dutch. Many Turks have emigrated to the Netherlands, and it's funny to hear a typical Turkish kid or grown up suddenly speak to you with even regional Dutch accents. They have an eye for Dutch tourists, although I am often mistaken for a German. Or they think I speak Flemish. It's very difficult to explain the concept of Flemish being almost Dutch, but not quite.
