Tokat Saat Kulesi

view map

The city boasts a – heavily canalized – river that must look impressive in some seasons, but in late summer had run dry. Along it stand some fine old houses, I hope the authorities will keep them and not have new apartment buildings built along it.

The Tokat clock tower was build in 1901, in a plain neoclassical European oriented style.
It has four floors and is 33 m high. On the upper floor, four clocks show the time in alle directions.
This is one of many clock towers that were built throughout the Ottoman Empire as a result of the decree which was sent to the provincial governors to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II's ascension to the Ottoman throne.
