Antakya mosaic Happy Hunchback

view map

I hesitated putting this picture on display, but after all the Lonely Planet guide refers to “the priapic happy hunchback” (as one of mosaics with quirkier subjects “not to be missed”, but if I get complaints I will take it off, not wanting to risk my pbase membership. But since this is in a formal museum (and not hidden behind a curtain as some pieces were in Ephesos museum when I first visited it in the early seventies) I thought it might be allowed. He has spits in his hands. It's from Antakya, second century AD. Inv. 1026/a.

Dear Dick
I live in Sweden since 1968. Originally born in Istanbul i spent my fisrt 20 yeras in this city but nowdays only a vsistor. As years pass i discovered that i have a tremendous interest in antique mosaics. I would like so much to learn much about that. Since some years i am trying to visit mosaic galleries when i am abroad. I searched information in the cyberspace during this cold winter nights of Svcandinavia and happily i fell on your webb sites of Antakya and G Antep museum. I was so happy to find all these pictures , i dont know what to say. They make me happy to watch them in details and i try to copy many of them in a private powe point document for my own sake and for giving some lecture for friends when possibility arises. Now I want to know how do you look upon that and if you give your permission?
Life must be love, joy, good feelings and what a lucky time when you can share these feelings.
In proffesional life i am a pediatrician (children doctor)

Many congratulations for your gallery and with best wishes
Yours sincerly,
Ihsan Sarman
