Bergama Pergamon Theatre

Turkey, Bergama

With its 37 meters rise this theatre is the steepest in the Greek world. It could seat some 10.000 people. On a 246 wide terrace the stage was set, three floors high. Holes for putting in the pegs that held the wooden stage can still be seen. It dates at the earliest from the third century, probably a bit later. After the Romans took over the city in 133 they redecorated the facade behind the stage in marble. To the right of the terrace is a second century Dionysus temple.

This is the stage area, the temple would be far to the right.
