Çanakkale along North Coast Dardanelles Seyit Onbas1

view map

This was a monument to a soldier who - during the Dardanelles campaign in the first World War - carried grenades weighing 276 kilo's to a huge gun when the winch to hoist them broke down. In another gallery I have a picture of the gun (you can return here). I found an interesting story that I could not check. It does not debunk the feat, but puts a funny twist to it, at Gallipoli Gossip.

NOTE: This particular monument has been replaced by another, where the man is wearing a cap but also and more importantly, where he is facing another way and carries the grenade on his back. See the next pictures. The monument is at two miles from Kilitbahir, travelling along the coast to the West.

the rest of Corporal Seyit's story missed in the "Gallipoli Gossip" is thus;
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, during his years of presidency, visited Havran, Seyit's village , and asked the local dignitaries to find Seyit so that he could meet him. Seyit was called to village square where Ataturk was await for him. He congradulated and kissed the veteran hero and then he addressed the local and national dignitaries around him telling them that this land was saved by such heroes, therefore they shoul be cared and looked after very well by the people and the state. In consequence a considerable amount of monthly pension was assigned to Seyit and also a vast piece of land was granted to him.
