In some mosques there will be a raised platform, with under it often a fountain to wash or refresh oneself with some water. I have not yet figured out what the raised platform is for. People may be praying up there, or just sit and in some cases even sleep. I have often been startled by people who would suddenly peek over the side of such a platform, when I thought I was alone.
