Istanbul Ortaköy Mosque along Bosporus 2003 12 10

view map

The mosque is nicely situated at the waters edge. Official name Büyük Mecidiye Camii. Büyük Camii means Big Mosque, and was built on orders of Sultan Mecid I, hence Mecidiye (I first thought it was named after a certain coin, but was put right, thanks to the comment below). The building is from 1854, needs some repair. The high rise in the back is of a more recent date.

The towers show that Istanbul is not afraid of introducing new styles. In fact they emphasise the beauty of the old

Hi Dick,

The word "Mecidiye" refers to the sultan (Abd-ul Mecid the 1st) who was reigned 1839-61. Tho mosk was built during his reign, and therefore, bears his name. Much like "Selimiye" (after Selim the 2nd) in Edirne, and "Suleymaniye" (after Suleyman the magnificent) in Istanbul.

Thanks for the splendid pictures!
