The mosque is a former church that has been converted (in 1489 by Koca Mustafa Pasha) into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul. In its interior one can recognize elements of the former church but the mihrab and mimber are now under the semidome against its south wall. The entrance in its north wall has had a wooden porch added. Two mausolea that built much later than the conversion of a church to a mosque are part of the complex. In one a Sümbül Efendi, a first sheik of a dervish tekke that was established here in the 16th century. Locals have been praying for his help in solving problems for ages. His daughter is in a mausoleum next to it, and is prayed to by young women looking for a husband. The whole complex is sometimes named after Sümbül Efendi, even the mosque that technically might better be called the Koca Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
