Antakya Archaeology Museum Frieze sarcophagus sept 2019 6128.jpg

This sarcophagus is called the "Frieze sarcophagus", it’s from the village of Aydi, made of marble, and from the second to third century AD. It represents a Psyche (soul) on the right side and Eros (love) on the left flanking an altar decorated with garlands. Psyche places a pine cone, taken from a plate held by Eros, next to others on the altar. The group is flanked by a Nike stabbing a deer with a dagger before her. On one of the short sides a couple holding hands may represent the owner of this tomb and his wife. On the other short side a man wears a Phrygian cap, pantaloons and pelerine, he pulls a woman towards him. Next to the woman a doorway represents the entrance to the tomb. On the rear side an incense burner is flanked by a lion attacking a bull scene on either side. On the lid a reclining man, whose head is missing.
