Zile 153.jpg

The Kale is a fine one, though with views that are less spectacular than the Turhal one. On the other hand, here, once you arrived, sweating from the climb, there is more than a lone radio station and a dilapidated portrait of Atatürk in blown out light bulbs, as is the case in Turhal. Rather, a nice tea garden awaits you. And: this is really a fortress, with thick walls, towers here and there, its defensible space. The Turhal Kale would take some repair to get even vaguely like it.

The hill where the castle stands was already an acropolis in classical times (Pontic kingdom). The actual buildings of the fortress, including the monumental entrance and the high watch tower on it, date from late medieval times up to 1875, when new barracks and a school were erected.
