Bursa Ulu Camii May 2014 7653.jpg

A wooden pavilion in the southeastern corner of the interior, reserved to the mosque’s staff. Its upper part (the balcony) was the ‘Hünkar mahfili’ (= lodge of the lord), a space reserved for the sultan or his representative. It has been built in a 19th century ‘Turkish Baroque’ style, which was influenced by European Neo-Classicism (and more specifically here by the French ‘Nouvel Empire’ style).

Note: The term ‘Turkish Baroque’ is a general one; if necessary, more specific terms are used: ‘Barok’ (= Neo-Baroque), ‘Rokoko’ (= Neo-Rococo) or ‘Ampir’ (= ‘Nouvel Empire’).
