Slightly downhill this is one of those peculiar graves you can see all over the country, in the middle of a road or pedestrian area, but so holy that they are never moved but just integrated in the street.

The Gül Baba Türbesi

This Gül Baba (= Father Rose) died in 1266 (Islamic date) or 1849/1850 AD. He is also called ‘Ankaralı Gül Baba’ (Father Rose from Ankara) of ‘Altındağlı Gül Baba’ (… from Altındağ, which is name of the nearby neighbourhood). ‘Baba’ indicates he was an elderly dervish, and the term ‘Gül’ (rose) is metaphorically used referring to the dervish's deep mystical knowledge of Allah.
But (less transcendental) the name could also be a corruption of Kel Baba, meaning "Bald Father".

This Gül/Kel Baba is not to be confused with another Gül Baba, also known as ‘Cafer’, an Ottoman Bektashi dervish poet and companion of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent who took part in a number of campaigns in Europe from the reign of Mehmed II onwards. His türbe (mausoleum) stands in Budapest (Hungary), where he died in 1541. Suleiman, who was also Caliph, declared him patron saint of that city.
