Izmir March 2011 6673.jpg

To the west of the agora there is a large area that in 2011 seemed to be torn down. I wonder if (and hope that) excavations will be done, because there must be a fair chance of finding more ancient locations.

See the message below about further excavations, and this building.

Dear Dick,
Full address for the website ishttp://www.antiksmyrna.com/
Mind you the English version of the site is real rough around the edges, too much missing info for now; hope you are comfortable with the Turkish version.
And yes there are Twitter and Facebook accounts too, not really actively used though.

Dear Burak,

Thank you for the information, I hope to return someday and see what new excavations have broughty to light.

For antiksmyrna.com I could only find a twitter account, do you have a fuller (and public) address?

Hi, I am with the excavation team working at Smyrna including the Agora shown here.

This area is now ours to excavate excluding the house shown in the picture. It's a nice 3-story house, dated to 18th century and is now being restored. Some claimed the house belonged to Sabbatai Zevi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabbatai_Zevi) but of course it's a much later building not related to him.
Not sure what this house will be used as; it belongs to the municipality but the area belongs to the Ministry of Culture. We were told this building could house a little museum or used as an entrance to the site, a cafe etc.

To the left of your picture, those old buildings are still there, we plan to excavate in that area but there is an Ottoman building there, probably an inn, so it complicates things.

To the north of this area, next to the multi-story carpark we started excavations and unearthed part of the Roman Bath.

There was another 19th century building there, it's now restored and used as the excavation house.

We have some pictures and info here;
