The entrance to the church. On a notice the following text is displayed (In […] I add some interpretations, remarks)
” The church of Saint Nicholas” [Myra] in the 5th century, became the capital of Lycia. For a long time the city was the second most powerful city in Asia Minor. After the death of Saint Nicholas, people erected a small memorial outside the city. Later, with Saint Nicholas becoming more popular, it became necessary to build a larger church. At the same time, the new “pilaster basilica” was constructed in Myra. The ancient writers also mentions [sic] a church in Constantinopolis which had been built in the Saint’s honor. The basilica was destroyed in the 8th century either through earthquake, war or [neglect due to a decline in population because of] major illnesses of the population. In the and [sic] of 8th or 9th century the dome-church was built. Some further buildings were added in the 11th century (Middle Byzantine period). It is known that the most important restoration of that time was done during the reign of Emperor IX Constantine Monakhos and his wife Zoe in 1042. Russian restoration done in 1862 is also very valuable. The Saint Nicholas church with its architecture and decorations, stands as an important example of the middle Byzantine art history. The complex of the Saint Nicholas church is based on buildings which were erected in different times. The whole complex consists of the dome church with an apse, a bema, the dome room, two aisles, one corner room in the northeast, another one in the southwest and an exo-narthex (room for the infidel). These buildings date from the 8th century. The former basilica had been built in the 5th or 6th century A.D.
I found interesting articles about the restoration works at 2007 works and 2008 works.
