Under the arch: The icon of the ‘Crucifixion’.
In Byzantine iconography, the accompanying characters are invariably determined. To the left of the crucified Jezus stand the Holy women, with Jezus’ mother Maria in their midst; to the right stand St. John (the Evangelist) and the centurion Longinos.
On the arch: (left) Jezus invites a martyr into Heaven; (right) Warrior saints ;
(in the top section) an archangel, in a medallion.
Byzantine frescos from the 12th century.
