Edirne december 2009 6066.jpg

view map

This mosque was built for Gazi Süleyman Paşa (died 1548), who was Rumeli Beylerbeyi (governor of the Trakya region) at the time. Considering the date of his death, the building of the mosque must have happened in the early 16th century (at its earliest). Alas, the ‘kitabe’ (building inscription) is gone missing.
The mosque was damaged by an earthquake in 1752 and restored two years later.

Nothing to do with the 16th century Sultan Suleyman.
