Karaman sept 2008 4706.jpg

This is the Yeni Minare Camisi, 16th century. Ottoman. It was locked so no interior pictures.

This ‘Mosque of the New Minaret’ was built in 1522 (during the reign of Sultan Süleyman I, the Magnificient), by Cambazzade Kadı Abdurrahman, a descendant of a family related to the (former) ruling Karamanoğulları. They were ‘Kadı’ (Judge) from father to son, and appear to have kept that position after the Ottoman (full) assumption of power in 1487.

On the picture: The gallery on the north side of the mosque, being also the ‘son cemaat yeri’ (= ‘area for those who came late’), where worshippers who reached the mosque late or at the last moment, will gather and fulfill their prayer duty.

Correspondent: J.M.Criel, Antwerpen.
