The main entrance of the university, from within the park that lies behind it. Immediately after the conquest Sultan Mehmet II founded a university and a few years later installed it in the eight medreses which were attached to his mosque. It was later moved to the buildings of the Seraskerat or Ministry of War. The main part was by French architect Bourgeois (1866) who built (I quote from the Strolling through Istanbul guide; Redhouse) in the "sumptuous stylessness then thought to be appropriate to ministerial edifices".
