Across the street from the Davut Paşa Mosque I noticed some restoration works. When I tried to enter people invited me in, a small group of men seemed to be living in what they told me was a former han (but read on). Though in a bad state in 2015 one could see that after the works had finished it might be a fine complex. I wrongly thought it was part of the Hekomoğlu Mosque complex, further down the road, but that is not the case. In Strolling through Istanbul it is described as the medrese of the külliye (complex with a mosque), though it is claimed to be to the north, I think east is more to the point. “The courtyard mush have been extremely handsome – indeed it still is – with its re-used Byzantine columns and capitals, but it is in an advanced state of ruin. Here immediate restoration is urgently needed […] for it is the only one of the fifteenth-century vezirial medreses which survives in something like its original form.” Well, the text is from over 40 years ago, but restoration is under way.
