Birecik has always intrigued me. I had passed it many times when traveling from the East to Adana or vice versa, and whished the bus would make a tourist stop of say an hour. As a matter of fact, when I finally made a trip on purpose from Gaziantep in 2005 I found it quite a pleasant place. Not one where I would stay days on end, but good enough for the major part of a day. I managed not to visit the one place it is famous for, that is some aviary where the last of the eastern bald ibis roam (I don’t know if they are kept in cages or can fly about somehow). I find the ibises in our local zoo not too impressive, and the spot seems to be some miles off the center. Instead I did cross the bridge to the other side, climbed to the kale or citadel (what’s left of it) and just roamed the market streets. Nice place. They have a good site on the internet, with pictures of the town in olden days and some explanation about the ibis some is in English . I myself add hardly any comments, the pictures essentially show the result of a walk towards the bridge (with the ibis monument), crossing it with pictures of the river to either side, return into the town, some shots of street life and mosques, the usual Atatürk monument, up to the citadel, down, and at the end some shots of a tunnel where people would go down to a well to collect water, that they might haul into the citadel.

BİRECİK

Birecik, her zaman ilgimi çekmiştir. Doğudan Adana’ya doğru veya tersi yönde seyahat ederken oradan birçok kere geçtim ve otobüsün (diyelim ki bir saatliğine) turistler için durmasını çok istedim. Sonunda 2005’te Gaziantep’ten Birecik’e gittiğmde, oranın çok hoş bir yer olduğunu anladım. Günlerce kalacağım bir yer olmasa da, bir günün büyük bölümü için yeterince iyi. Son doğu kelaynaklarının bulunduğu çok ünlü bir kuşhaneyi ziyaret etmemeyi başardım (kafeslerde mi tutuluyorlar yoksa bir şekilde uçabiliyorlar mı bilmiyorum). Kendi yerel hayvanat bahçemizdeki kelaynakları pek etkileyici bulmamýştım, ayrıca bu kuşhane merkeze kilometrelerce uzaklıktaydı. Onun yerine köprünün öteki tarafına geçtim, kaleye (kaleden geriye kalanlara) tırmandım ve çarşıyı dolaştım. Hoş bir yer. İlçnin eski resimlerinin ve kelaynakla ilgili bilgilerin (bazıları İngilizce) bulunduğu güzel bir internet siteleri var. . Resimlerle ilgili neredeyse hiç açıklama yapmadım. Bu galeride köprüye doğru yaptığım yürüyüşte (kelaynak heykelinin resimlerini de burada çektim) ve onu geçerken nehrin üzerinde çektiğim resimler var. Ayrıca sokaktaki yaşama dair fotoğraflar, camiler ve Atatürk anıtının resimleri, kaleye çıkarken ve oradan inerken çektiklerim, son olarak da insanların bir kuyudan su almak için gittikleri bir tünelin resimleri.

Firstly i thank you for the nice pictures from Birecik (my native land).Birecik is a very likeable city despite being small.You have mentioned to bald ibis.They are being kept in big cages in order to be prevented from hunting yet, but in migration terms they are released.There is also another bird which has been protected from extinction : Otus Bruceu ,an owl lives in willow groves of Birecik.Maybe you can visit them in your next coming.Thanks again for your precious work.
