Inexplicably, I ran the 2011 Vermont Corporate Cup 5K along with 2800 other yahoos. I had never run a competitive 5k and, before my warmup test last week, hadn't run that far off the elliptical in more than 28 years! It was fun. Gotta love Vermont: the Governor saw me pre-race on the Capitol's lawn and I got a glimmer of recognition, a handshake, and a directive to "run hard." Thoroughly entertaining! I did as he instructed, though the right knee didn't like the last mile. I finished at 27:39, so I'm more of a tortoise than the hare I used to be back in the day, but I got in under 30:00 which was my goal. I ranked 664th overall and that works for me -- 666th would have been mark of the beast, so it's a good thing I leaned forward at the finish, and I bettered my goal of top 1000. Love my teammates, NMC Physician Recruiter Brenna Sturtevant and NMC Health Promo Nurse Barbara Mentzer. We all bettered our goal times (Brenna at 28:09 vs 29:00; Barb at 33:49 vs 35:00), so that was our version of sweet victory.
