Several days ago a woman called to tell me about her father-in-law and his visit as Santa to a senior citizens' lunch. It would be, I thought, a cute interview and, obviously appropriate for the season. It was so much more.
Harry is a third generation blacksmith, though this is not something he does for a living. He learned at his father's side at age six, feeding air to the forge. He restores things - old motorcycles, old cars, old toys large and small and even an 1800s era sleigh that he found cut in half and decorated with lights. Harry did such an amazing job with the restoration that it's impossible to tell the old side from the completely new.
His philosophy - If you can't find the good in someone, you're probably not looking hard enough. Then he added - Well, if you REALLY can't find anything good, that's when you should feel sorry for 'em .. not hateful.
