It seems hard to believe now that on Christmas Day the Wild River was the merest of trickles on the verge of drying completely, and I was desperately hand-watering parts of the garden to keep it alive.
On Dec. 27 & 28, localised thunderstorms struck my home town which is high in the river’s catchment not far from its source in a rainforest spring, with 90 mm of rain including about 50 mm in an hour.
Then, on Jan. 2, the monsoon arrived, the sun disappeared and we’ve had a further 300 mm of steady, soaking rain. That's a total of almost 16 inches in two weeks.
I took this photo on Jan. 8, a day or so after the river had peaked a metre higher than this.
Today – Jan. 10 – there’s still no sign of the sun and we’ve had another extended bout of rain overnight. And there’s a fair bit more - about another 80 mm - forecast for the coming week.
