Black She-oak (Allocasuarina littoralis)

The true leaves of this she-oak are the red rings of scales around the green stem. It is a system that works well in coping with dry periods – there’s been no effective rain for 5 months now, yet this is growing and starting to flower.
Black She-oak has male and female flowers on different plants; this one is male and the flowers are the tiny projections at the tip of some branchlets.

Lovely Don.. I have a She-Oak bowl blank for making a salad bowl. Wonder if it is the same species. (It is from Australia). Thanks for the picture and explanation.
