resprout eucalypt

A feature of most eucalypts is their remarkable ability to resprout vigorously from the trunk and branches after even the hottest of wildfires.
This tree was totally defoliated by fire 70 days before I took the photo.
This ability derives from having their reserve bud shoots deeply embedded in the wood below the bark, out of reach of the scorching heat.
