Basket Fern (Drynaria rigidula)

Basket Fern is an epiphyte, growing on trees or rocks (here a granite boulder) rather than in soil. It has two types of fronds, the "normal" type and these basal fronds that form a basket to capture falling leaves. As the fallen leaves decompose, they provide the fern with nutrients and hold moisture around its roots. In this photo you can see new, old and very old basket fronds.
