From Cooktown we drove south past Black Mountain to Rossville, where we camped two nights at Home Rule. Home Rule is a property and substantial clearing in the northern part of the Wet Tropics rainforest, a former tin mine about a century ago, and gateway to Home Rule Falls and the wilderness of the Cedar Bay Range. I wondered about the political-sounding name, and enquired about it. We were told that the tin mine had been owned by two Irishmen, and that the name is a statement about Irish politics as they were then.
