In Memoriam - CDR Tom Vellanti, USCGR Retired


Commander Tom Vellanti was in my Coast Guard Reserve Unit (ORTUAG 07-83479, renamed to CGRU Miami IV) in the mid 1970's and he was our Commanding Officer during part of that time. It's been 30+ years since I've seen him but I remember him as an excellent officer and commanding officer, with a great sense of humor and great people skills. I remember dining at Picciolo's on Miami Beach with him and other unit members because he loved good Italian food. Godspeed Commander Vellanti!

It was my pleasure to honor him, Chris, because he was well-liked in the CG Reserve. I enjoyed my time serving in his unit because he treated everyone nicely and there were good times instead of all-business with no laughter. I can fully appreciate how much you miss such a great guy and father like him and you were lucky to be his son. I hope that time passing will ease the pain of his loss and that you treasure all the good times you shared with him for many years.

Dear Mr Boyd, Thank you for your kind words regarding my father during his life in the Coast Guard. He was a great officer as you say I am sure of that. But he was an even better father. Just a great person who loved people of all walks of life. I am gonna miss the ole boy a lot. We had a great relationship and I spoke to him almost every day.
