Mid 1950's - the Top of the Columbus Hotel restaurant on Biscayne Boulevard

Biscayne and NE 1st Street, Miami, Florida

Thank you to Cecil C. Curry for contributing this great image of the Columbus Hotel around 1955 or 1956. The image was on a postcard that states on the back "Top O' The Columbus, Biscayne Blvd., at 1st Street where a magnificent view of Biscayne Bay offers a renezvous for cocktails and gracious dining."

Cecil was born in 1936 and went to Morningside Elementary (see his great 1941-1942 first grade class photo in the 40's gallery), Horace Mann Junior High and Edison Senior High, graduating in 1954. He left Miami in 1961 and now lives in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

In 1957, at 11 yr's of age, our Southwest Boy's Club football team won the ICAC Championship.(Inter-City Athletic Conference) Our quarterback was none other than Larry Rentz. His dad was our team Doctor. Anyhow, our Awards Night banquet was held at the Columbus in this very room. Presenter of our trophies? None other than Vice President Richard Nixon! Bebe Robozo was his good friend, and Mr. Robozo was deeply involved with the Boy's Club, so I'm pretty sure thats how Mr. Nixon ended up there.

Went to dinner with my parents here on some big occasions. I remember they had a small pool on the roof and glass walls that you could see through from the restaurant.
If memory serves, they had a Weeki-Wachee Springs type "mermaid" show during dinner!

Ron, welcome and thank you for your comments. It's a labor of love that fortunately a lot of other people happen to enjoy.

When I found this picture and the other one of the exterior of the Columbus, I had to call my dad and let him know. My dad moved to Miami from New York back in the late 50's and worked at the Columbus from that time well into the early 60's. I'm sure I put a smile on his face as he and I reminisced of a time gone by. (Although I didn't come til later on in '81).
Don, this site is truly an amazing collection. Thanks for sharing it.

Celebrated my 9th grade graduation here in 1957. I wore a pink lace and chiffon dress with black suede heels.
