Mid 1950's - the Columbus Hotel on Biscayne Boulevard

Biscayne and NE 1st Street, Miami, Florida

Thank you to Cecil C. Curry for contributing this great image of the Columbus Hotel around 1955 or 1956. The image was on a postcard that states on the back "Located at Biscayne Blvd., at 1st Street - The Columbus is Miami's distinguished Bayfront Hotel, facing the park and Biscayne Bay - the choice of discriminating travelers."

Cecil was born in 1936 and went to Morningside Elementary (see his great 1941-1942 first grade class photo in the 40's gallery), Horace Mann Junior High and Edison Senior High, graduating in 1954. He left Miami in 1961 and now lives in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

long shot! if anyone is still following this thread - especially Bob who worked at Dick Richmond's - I'm looking for more info on Dick and his wife Edith. He is my great uncle. They never had any kids so hard to find info on them! would love to make contact! thanks. Diane (derichmond (at) gmail.com)

Great memories! In 1950s and '60s my parents brought sister and I here often when vacationing from Venezuela (Creole Oil family). Also stayed frequently at Colonial Inn on the beach - and went one year to Miami Military Academy.

The Columbus Hotel was tops. :)

Hey, could "Bill" below , from 2008, chime back in? I too remember the model airplanes, and watching the Orange Bowl Parade from the Columbus top floor bay windows, and I TOO LIVED ON SUNSET ISLAND NO. 3! So which Bill is this---we must know each other. 2277 Sunset Drive, SSI # 3!

PS. Was good friends with the son of the owner of the Columbus at the time…the Lynch family. Who also lived on Sunset Island No 3.

This comment to Richard K who has a Dick Richmond's coat hanger. I worked in the store in 1949-50 as a stock clerk. Graduated from Miami Beach High School in 1950 and then enlisted in the AF and served in the korean war for approx.4 years.I went back to Miami in the early 1980's to check on the store but it was no longer in operation.

My father use to stay at the Columbus in late 50's
on business trips to Miami. I am now the proud owner of 6 or 7 Columbus Hotel wooden coat hangers. I assume the hotel is no longer there. I also have a wooden hanger from Dick Richmond 's Men's Store , 201 East Flagler, Miami.
Also wondering if the store is still around?

I remember visiting my Uncle, J. Richard Krokonis who worked at Top of The Columbus as a bartender, this was back in the mid- fifties. He worked there for many years, someplace we have a postcard showing him working the bar.

The Top of the Columbus served the best prime rib in Miami in the 50's and 60's.

The top of the Columbus is where my family took me to celebrate my 9th grade graduation in 1957. I celebrated with the traditional "Mary Jane" drink! I tried a "Grass Hopper"; it was awful.

I remember getting my haircut here. I also remember the Airline model planes on display that I was facinated by. We lived on Sunset Island 3 and my mom drove me here.
