1957 - the north entrance to the Burdines department store at 163rd Street Shopping Center

163rd Street Shopping Center, Dade County, Florida

The north entrance/exit was on the store's 1st floor and you had to ride the escalator up to the 2nd floor to go out to the shopping center/mall center walkway. They later built a short parking garage connected to Burdines where the ground level lot is depicted. Note the canopied walkway extending out in the parking lot.

Thank you to Jeff Levine for the following information: The Grand Opening of 163rd Street Shopping Center was on November 1, 1956. George Friedlander, founder of Food Fair Stores built a number of shopping centers with his real estate division.

Rumored to have been slated for NE 125th Street in North Miami, but rejected by a city not ready for the increased traffic and business growth, a parcel of former farm land - and an "island" of county property not subject to North Miami Beach taxation, was purchased by Friedlander, and everything came together into what was one of the most popular shopping venues until it's decline in the 1980's.

The opening tenant list consisted of:

I remember this north entrance on the second level. Used to drive up there to watch sunsets. I also shopped the store. I miss Burdines, Jordan Marsh and even Richards, which used to be at the west end of the mall.

Dave, thank you for posting and for having memories that go back further than mine as to what the area was prior to the mall. : )

Prior to the construction of the 163rd St Shopping Center, the entire property was a thoroughbred breeding farm. My friends and I would collect bottles, turn them in for the 2 cent deposit, buy apples at the Mom & Pop store (the was no supermarket in the area), then take the apples to feed to the thoroughbred colts.

I recently visited the Shopping center while back in north miami. Funny thing is they tore down the 1969/70 (whenever it was done) building & parking garage addition and the north side of the original Burdines building & it looks similar to this once again. Only its a Ross and the Architecture is different. A rare case where something reverts back!

Oh my god. This is so surreal. If i'm not mistaken, I would think that Marshalls is in there in the spot of this now.
