1966 - the bayfront area of downtown Miami and the Brickell area

Downtown Miami, Florida

Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this great image of an area that has totally changed since the photo was taken.

The First National Bank of Miami is prominent in the photo, with the large surface parking lots between it and the Dupont Plaza Hotel. Claughton Island, now Brickell Key and chock a block full of high-rises, is being cleared in the background on the left side.

There's Claughton Island! Would Mr. Claughton be surprised if he saw it now as Brickell Key loaded with high rise buildings. Mr. Claughton was an attorney and a nice fellow (my sister worked for him out of high school). Across from the now Brickell Key is the Brickell area shoreline, also loaded with high rise buildings, including one where my husband and I live after selling our Gable's home. We are in transition to leaving Miami for retirement and wanted the "experience" of living on the water for a couple years. It's fantastic!

McCarthy, Steel, Hector & Davis was a law firm. My father was Bill Steel. Before moving into this building, the firm (different name then) was in the Ingrahm Building. In the 80s the firm moved into, what was then, the new/TALL bank building in the same area. It's been several years now that the firm was taken over by a midwestern firm.

Now I am showing my age, I think McCarthy Steel Hector and Davis, not lawyers but insurance people was the first job I had prior to this one and they were located from my memory around 37th av and Flagler, I believe. Actually, I forget the name of the law firm that I worked for. Forgive me for being wrong.

I worked in this building in 1973 - 1974 for a law firm, McCarthy, Steele, Hector & Davis. I forget what floor they were on. I remember by this time, Downtown Miami was kind of scary after dark for a young female. I had missed the 5:15 bus one time and had to wait for another, and was very afraid. But I do love the view.
